YORKSHIRE BIOMATERIALS NETWORK 09.11.2007
New and innovative developments in biomaterials and tissue engineering are seeing Yorkshire become a world-beating centre for this type of research, and it was for this reason that the Yorkshire Biomaterials Network (YBN) was set up. Biomaterials is a highly interdisciplinary subject and because of this the expertise for the YBN had to be drafted in from all over the region, including academic researchers, clinicians and industrialists. The network, which Medilink played a key role in initiating, encompasses biomaterials groups from Sheffield and Leeds, and also has multidisciplinary research groups from the Universities of Bradford, Hull and York. Each area will develop projects in collaboration with each other, some of which will involve industry. This will provide an opportunity for local SMEs to get involved, with Medilink acting as a facilitator. This will help the network, which was set up in 1998, to realise its objective of establishing Yorkshire as an internationally recognised region of excellence for biomaterials research and the biomaterials industry.
