The cuvette
Plasma and reagent are simultaneously but separately incubated in the same cuvette; fine partitions in the floor of the cuvette prevent the fluids from flowing together. The 4-fold cuvette bar is integrated into a transportation system, and up to 58 bars for 232 tests can be loaded for testing in the storage stack.

The measuring process
Cuvette bars are transported from the stack to the pipetting station. After pipetting is completed, the bar is transported by sequential timing controls through three incubation positions which simultaneously incubate both sample and reagent to 37°C. The bar then moves into the measuring block which tips the cuvette down by 90° into a vertical position. The steel ball, plasma and reagent are forced down to the bottom of the cuvette where the ball starts rotating and thereby mixes the fluids.

The measuring system
A circulating magnet underneath the cuvette causes a steel ball to rotate, leading to the sample being very quickly and smoothly mixed. The ball binds and concentrates the developing fibrin strands in the optical light path, assuring optimal signal detection. The coagulation process is monitored by computer and compared to internal standards. In the case of a deviation, the test result is marked with an error flag. An automatic filter changer enables additional measurements such as chromogenic substrates and immunology, which are measured with 405 nm and 546 nm.

The sample distributor
Plasma and reagents are distributed with a pipette probe. The probe is rinsed between dispensing steps with distilled water and additionally decontaminated with a special Clean solution. A capacity level sensor controls the extraction of liquids from the collection tubes and from the reagent bottles.

The sample rotor
Each sample rotor has 31 positions for routine testing. Emergencies can be placed in a vacant sample position at any time. Each position is flexibly designed for collection tubes with 10–15mm diameter.

The reagent block
The cooled reagent block has positions for 16 reagent bottles and 5 control plasmas. Thrombolyzer RackRotor can, therefore, process up to 10 different test parameters without being refitted. In addition, up to 9 reagent blocks with different tests can be freely defined and the system adjusted by pressing a key. 24 cuvette positions are available for tests requiring pre-dilution.

User-friendly software
All information and commands for the daily routine are easily surveyed in the well structured main menu. Operating the instrument can be learned in a short time. Data entries are conducted entirely from the keyboard or by the barcode scanner. Various password levels protect the system from unauthorised access.

Instrument and Apparatus Trolleys

The Becker instrument and apparatus trolleys are made of chrome nickel steel, alloy AISI 304 (1.4301) and comply with the DIN standard for packaging of sterile goods.
They consist of a sturdy chrome nickel steel tubular frame and are mobile on 4 anti-static swivel castors, 75 mm ø; 2 of the castors are fitted with brakes.
Chrome nickel steel shelves are fixed or removable.
Optional extras include a plastic guard and drawer units.
Multi-purpose trolleys are of similar construction to the instrument and apparatus trolleys. To make long transport stretches easier they are fitted with swivel castors with a diameter of 125 mm. All the multi-purpose trolleys are also fitted with a chrome nickel steel handle.

The PHYSIONORM N.B.P. stabilometric system (N.B.P. stands for Normalised Balance Platform) consists of a 3-point platform, made according to the normalisation criteria established by the French Society of Posturology, and of a specific software
( NBP Software ).

The N.B.P. platform communicates directly with a normal Personal Computer (PENTIUM® Multimedial), as it is equipped with an internal conversion circuit; therefore no other boards or modules are required.

The signals picked up by the 3 “strain-gage” sensors are directly converted into digital data and sent to the “computer” via a serial RS232 link.

The N.B.P. platform may be provided with or without a computer; it can also operate alongside a normal P.C. with a SuperVGA monitor. The new version offers the possibility to acquire up to 4 EMG sygnals, simultaneously with the balance sygnals. PERIPROBE VAG-2ST Cheap disposable internal electrode for the re-education of incontinence through vaginal stimulation of anus raising muscles. The diagnostics techniques are continuously improved, due to the technological progress and to the medical researches. The diagnostic technique denominated “urodynamics”, consisting in the recording and in the study of all the parameters (volume, pressure, flow) relative to the filling and emptying phases of the miction, has reached today a good degree of reliability. Although it must be considered an invasive diagnostic tool (introduction of catheters in the urethra), it can also be considered an elective and often conclusive examination in the diagnosis of the obstructions or of the anomalies in the vesico-urethral urinary system.

The BEA’s internal organisation

From an organisational point of view, BEA is structured into 4 departments:

The Economics & Starters Department provides information and advice on, among other things, public and private aid and services available in the Brussels Capital Region.
The Town Planning and Environment Department notably provides practical and specific answers to doing business successfully while complying with the many town planning and environmental regulations.
The Technology and Innovative Projects Department informs, advises and supports the implementation of all of your innovative projects.
The International Relations Department provides information on and access to possible sources of European financing, and helps entrepreneurs to identify and approach European partners. BEA is the Brussels representative of the European network of Innovation Relay Centers. This department is also responsible for identifying and attracting foreign investors who wish to set up or might wish to set up businesses in the Brussels Capital Region.
