Company Profile
A remarkable past, an exciting future
Basell’s foundations are strong and deep in the world of polyolefins. With a long and distinguished record of innovation — in polypropylene, polyethylene, advanced polyolefins and polybutene-based products – we are also widely recognized for customer-orientation, quality focus and global reach.
Our history includes many of the best achievements in the polyolefins industry’s history. Our heritage includes some of the chemical industry’s most illustrious names:
BASF, Hercules, Himont, Hoechst, ICI, Montecatini, Montedison and Shell
Spurred on by the work of Nobel Prize-winning scientists Karl Ziegler and Giulio Natta, these Basell predecessor companies were among the leaders of the polyolefin revolution that began in the late 1930s and 1950s. This transformation is still driving the petrochemicals industry today.
Throughout the second half of the 20th century, these polyolefin pioneering organizations:
Collaborated, combined and evolved their businesses
Extended the frontiers of plastics’ technology, applications and performance
In 2000, when Basell was formed – through the merger of Montell, Elenac and Targor - there was a new name for the global leader in polyolefins technology, production and marketing.
In 2004, Basell was purchased by Access Industries, a privately held, U.S.-based industrial group with long-term holdings worldwide.
On Dec. 20, 2007, Lyondell Chemical Company and Basell Polyolefins merged to become LyondellBasell Industries - one of the world’s largest polymers, chemicals and fuels companies.
