Catheters
In Vitro/In Vivo Efficacy
The anti-microbial properties of the Bactiguard® coating, has been proven for clinically relevant strains of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as for fungi.
Toxicological testing shows that the antimicrobial property of the Bactiguard® coating is not achieved at the expense of its biocompatibility1.
Mouse fibroblasts; extracts from the Bactiguard® coated catheter did not show cytotoxic reactions.
Short and long term implantation studies; no differences in biological reactions compared to control.
Hemocompatibility; no tendency of increased platelet adhesion due to the Bactiguard® coating.
Urethral Applications
The noble metal alloy Bactiguard® coated latex urinary catheter has been proven to prevent urinary infections in many clinical investigations over the years. The bulk of the published clinical trial data includes close to 30 000 patients plus well over 50.000 patients in cohort studies. The average reduction of catheter associated urinary tract infection of about 30-40% can be directly related to the unique properties of the Bactiguard® coating of urinary catheters.

Blood Applications
A clinical study of Bactiguard® coated central venous catheters has also been carried out. It was concluded that the coating significantly reduced the incidence of infections by approximately 50% after thirteen days.
